Today is the third day of my Five photos – Five stories challenge and I wanted to share another photo from my time in the Navy.
In april 2012 we sailed from Norway to Svalbard. The archipelago is one of the northernmost land-areas in the world, around 78 degrees north.
I was completely astonished by the beauty of nature there, and since it’s off the beaten track humans have hardly left their mark on it, most of this territory is still pristine, without roads or other signs of human inventions.
Every year they have a cross-country ski marathon and lucky for us it was held the day after our arrival. Me and some of the guys from the boat decided that we wanted to participate and signed up. The race was 42km and took us about 6 hours to finish. I honestly suffered during the whole marathon, but the feeling of accomplishment I got after crossing the finish line made it all worth it. The picture above was taken during the marathon and I’m so happy that I got to see this beautiful scenery.
I would recommend everyone who wants to enjoy the beauty of nature somewhere peaceful and majestic to visit Svalbard.

I have never been there, yet, but wish. My mother almost sailed to Svanbard a few years back, but they turned south in Tromsø.

A full marathon, but in cross country skiing sounds so cool. Skiing does use a lot of different muscles.
